From Athlete to Entrepreneur: Bowie State Alum Brian Kelley Turns Passion into Business Success

Brian Kelley, a 2017 graduate of Bowie State University, is making waves as a serial entrepreneur. He’s the driving force behind High-Level Sports Management, the Mid-Atlantic Basketball Classic (MABC), and the luxury wine brand Imperial 94—each representing his dedication to innovation, leadership, and community-driven success, traits fostered during his time at an HBCU.
Kelley’s entrepreneurial journey began after transferring to Bowie State from Norfolk State University for his senior year. With deep family ties to Bowie, his decision was both personal and professional. Armed with a degree in communications and a background in basketball and media, Kelley founded High-Level Sports Management. His company is dedicated to helping young athletes achieve long-term success both on and off the court.
Through High-Level Sports Management, Kelley also created the Mid-Atlantic Basketball Classic, a premier high school tournament that connects student-athletes with college scouts and media exposure.
“The biggest challenge for players today is the transfer portal, which limits traditional recruiting,” Kelley explained. “We help them build their personal brand and get noticed by the right people.” His commitment to student-athletes goes beyond sports, providing resources to ensure their long-term success in life.
In 2019, Kelley expanded his entrepreneurial portfolio with the launch of Imperial 94, a luxury wine brand. Imperial 94 blends sophistication with culture, and its pink rosé has sold out twice, quickly gaining recognition and establishing Kelley as one of Maryland’s youngest Black wine owners.
“‘Imperial’ means royalty, and ‘94’ represents my birth year,” Kelley said. “Our goal is to make every consumer feel like they’re experiencing something elite.”
Balancing his ventures, Kelley credits his success to strategic planning and a strong support system. “I focus on high school basketball during the season, while Imperial 94 runs year-round,” he said. “Having a reliable team is crucial.” Through his businesses, Kelley continues to uplift his community, mentor young entrepreneurs, and honor the legacy of excellence at Bowie State University.
