A Win for Student-Athletes: Grants Fund Mental Health and Social Media Research

College sports are more demanding than ever, and the NCAA is taking notice. In a big win for student-athletes, three research teams will receive a total of $100,000 in Innovations in Research and Practice Grants to study and develop new programs focused on your well-being. These projects, chosen from over 100 proposals, will focus on three critical areas that directly impact you every day: mental health, the pressures of social media, and managing injuries.
The New Game Plan for Well-Being
The goal of this grant program is to produce practical, research-backed solutions that can be shared with schools across the country. The projects, which will make their findings available in 2027, include:
- Mindfulness for Recovery: A team at Emory will study how mindfulness training can help injured student-athletes recover faster and more completely. This research could lead to new ways to support you both physically and mentally when you’re sidelined.
- AI-Powered Mentorship: Researchers at Temple are developing an AI-powered mentorship program to support your holistic development. This project aims to use technology to provide personalized guidance, helping you manage the balance between your sport, academics, and personal life.
- Battling Online Abuse: At Bowling Green, a team is tackling the issue of sports betting-related online abuse. Their research will help create an intervention program to address the harmful impact of online harassment, a problem many athletes face.
