Colorado Football: Get Ready for a More Physical Game This Season

Colorado football is back, but don’t expect the same style of play you saw last year. Coach Deion Sanders is shaking things up, promising a more physical brand of football this season.1 With key players like Travis Hunter and Shedeur Sanders now in the NFL, the Buffaloes are moving away from a pass-heavy offense and embracing a different approach.
“It’s not going to be the heroics of maybe 400 yards passing and Travis jumping over somebody,” Sanders said. “It’s going to be a little more physical. A little more rough.”
A New QB Leads the Offense
One of the biggest changes is at quarterback, where Sanders has named Kaidon Salter as the starter.2 Salter, a transfer from Liberty, is a dual-threat quarterback with a ton of experience.3 “He’s been up under the lights before and he’s a dual-threat guy that can do some incredible things,” Sanders said.4
However, Salter won’t be the only one taking snaps. Sanders made it clear that competition never stops, and freshman Julian “JuJu” Lewis will also get opportunities on the field.5 This two-quarterback system shows that Sanders is keeping everyone on their toes and that every position has to be earned each week.6
Young Players Step Up
With four wide receivers from last year’s team now in the NFL, a new group of talented players is ready to take charge. One of those players is sophomore Dre’lon Miller, who is ready to lead the charge for the wide receivers. He says the new group is excited to live up to the high standard set by the players before them.
According to Miller, last year was all about “soaking up all that knowledge.”7 Now, it’s about putting that knowledge into action and showing the new guys what the standard is. He wants the team to “play free, trust your studies, trust your technique and trust the coaching.”8
