Breaking Barriers on and off the Track

Tyshawn Brownfield, a runner at the University of Pittsburgh-Greensburg, is working to create a more inclusive world for future student-athletes. As a Black and openly gay man, Brownfield understands the importance of visibility in sports and other fields. He shares his story to serve as the representation he wished he had growing up, hoping to show others in the LGBTQIA+ community and beyond that they can be their authentic selves while pursuing their dreams.
Despite facing challenges at his first two colleges, Brownfield remained determined. He used his focus to improve on the track, where his results spoke for themselves, and he found confidence in his own success. Beyond athletics, he is a passionate advocate for inclusion and mental health, with a goal of becoming a mentor to children.
Brownfield’s journey is a testament to his resilience and dedication. As he works toward his degree in psychology, he hopes his story will empower others to live their truth and understand that their unique identity is a strength, not a weakness.
