5 Tips for Acing AI-Powered Job Interviews, from a Banker-Turned-Career Coach

As companies increasingly rely on AI to screen job applicants, including through video interviews, written tests, job simulations, and psychometric evaluations, understanding how to navigate these assessments is crucial. Herman Ko, a former banker and now head coach at Career Hackers, shares five essential tips for standing out in AI-driven hiring processes.

At 27, Ko has experience both as a job applicant and a recruiter. After spending over three years at JPMorgan, he transitioned to Career Hackers, where he now helps design AI assessments for companies. Ko explains how recruiters use AI to quickly identify top candidates, making the job search more competitive than ever.

Here are his five tips to help you succeed in AI-based hiring assessments:

  1. Make the First 30 Seconds Count
In AI-driven video interviews, the first 30 seconds are crucial. Human recruiters tend to skim early clips, and AI quickly analyzes your introduction, so a strong, confident start is key to making a lasting impression.
  2. Stand Out as a Top 1% Candidate
Ko advises that applicants avoid generic responses. To compete for the best roles, especially in fields like investment banking, you must present answers that distinguish you from the 99% of candidates. Think about what the average applicant would say and craft a unique, thoughtful response.
  3. Maintain a Professional Image
Even in the comfort of your home, it’s important to project a professional image. Dress appropriately and choose a clean, tidy environment for your interview. AI tools may also analyze your attire and background to assess professionalism.
  4. Keep It Natural
While it’s tempting to read from a script or force certain keywords, Ko warns that AI can detect unnatural responses. Instead, stay relaxed, speak clearly, and avoid rushing. A steady pace ensures that both AI and human assessors can properly analyze your answers.
  5. Avoid Using AI in Your Preparation
Although the interview is AI-driven, Ko strongly advises against using AI tools to craft your responses. AI systems can detect when answers have been generated by other AI tools, and this can hurt your chances. Stay authentic and prepare naturally to succeed.

Contact Look-Ups

Unlock verified email and LinkedIn info for your target contacts so you can reach out directly. Each time you unlock a person’s contact information (email, LinkedIn, and more), it counts as a contact look-up. Your plan includes a set number of credits to use toward these look-ups.
