Austin Peay Supports Female Student-Athletes with Career Development and Suit Fitting

Austin Peay State University recently celebrated its graduating and senior female student-athletes with a special career development event. Thanks to a generous donation from Larry Carroll, Kris Carroll, and Averill Harkey, more than 35 students were able to get a custom-tailored suit from Dillard’s of Clarksville. The event, which was held to commemorate National Girls and Women in Sports Day, was designed to help these young women prepare for their professional careers.

At the fitting, the students had a personalized experience, choosing every detail of their suits, from the fabric and color to the inner lining. This was the first time many of them had owned a suit, and it gave them a sense of confidence and readiness for their next chapter. “Receiving this suit has given me a sense of confidence and readiness for what’s next,” said senior soccer player Hannah Zahn. “I feel prepared to walk into interviews and take professional headshots knowing I’m putting my best foot forward.”

Following the fittings, the student-athletes participated in a career development workshop led by Stephanie Barret and Alexis Barlow from Her Competitive Advantage (HCA). HCA is a new platform that connects female athletes with potential employers. Austin Peay is one of the first universities to partner with HCA, giving students access to valuable resources on resume writing, job search strategies, and interview techniques. “Empowering these young women with the tools and confidence they need to succeed in their careers is at the heart of what we do,” Barret said. The workshop was a hit with the students, who appreciated the practical advice and support.

This initiative is part of Austin Peay’s comprehensive “LeadHer” program, which is dedicated to advancing women’s athletics by fostering leadership, advocacy, and service. The program aims to support female student-athletes both during their time at the university and after they graduate. The university plans to continue the celebration of National Girls and Women in Sports Day with a youth clinic and basketball game on February 5.
