Challenges in the Job Market for Computer Science Graduates: A Tough Road Ahead

Graduating from the University of Iowa, hundreds of future engineers crossed the stage last Sunday, but the path forward is far from smooth.

For recent computer science graduates like Rabi Alaya and Joseph Bartoszczyk, securing a job in their field isn’t as easy as expected.

“Some people are drowning in job offers, some are struggling to find anything,” Alaya said. “It depends on your GPA and how many internships you’ve had.”

Despite the demand for tech talent, the reality of job hunting remains challenging. A Federal Reserve Bank of New York study shows a 6.1% unemployment rate for computer science graduates.

Although Alaya has secured a position at the University of Iowa, it wasn’t exactly his dream role. “It’s the only offer I got,” he said, acknowledging the tough job market.

Bartoszczyk, still job hunting, shared his frustration: “You message hiring managers on LinkedIn, apply to jobs, and get no response. It’s like you’re invisible.”

While Alaya believes luck plays a significant role in job success, Bartoszczyk is determined to keep applying. “I’ll just keep trying,” he said. The struggle for computer science graduates is real, but perseverance may eventually pay off.
