More Than a Game: SIUE Athletics Puts Student-Athletes First

SIUE Athletics is redefining what it means to be a student-athlete by championing a comprehensive approach to success that extends far beyond the playing field. In the 2024-25 academic year, the Cougars demonstrated a deep commitment to the holistic development of their athletes, focusing on community engagement, career preparation, and diversity and inclusion initiatives.

Building Leaders for Life

The centerpiece of this effort is the “In It to Win It Leadership Development” initiative, a program designed by Dr. Venessa A. Brown. Modeled after Jackie Joyner Kersee’s “Winning in Life” program, this framework helps student-athletes prepare for life after college while also enhancing their current academic and athletic careers.

This past year, the program’s monthly events covered a range of crucial topics, including financial literacy, personal branding, mental health, and time management. Partnerships with local organizations like Northwestern Mutual brought these lessons to life, encouraging athletes to explore new interests and develop a well-rounded skill set.

The Cougars’ commitment to the community was particularly impressive. Their student-athletes volunteered over 2,000 hours, participating in events like Community Service Day, an initiative created by track and field student-athlete Vashanti Reynolds. This focus on giving back has not only helped local organizations like Restore Decor and the Metro East Humane Society but has also instilled a sense of purpose and leadership in the athletes themselves.

By prioritizing these comprehensive programs, SIUE Athletics is ensuring that the lessons learned translate into personal, academic, and athletic success, preparing its student-athletes for a lifetime of growth and achievement.
