Student-Athlete Teamwork: The Two-Way Street

College is a time of immense demand for students, and for student-athletes, the challenge of balancing academics with the rigors of sports can be even more complex. However, for a student in business, the two pursuits can be surprisingly complementary, as both place a strong emphasis on teamwork. The ability to work as a member of a team is a valuable life skill that enhances problem-solving, boosts productivity and morale, and builds essential skills like communication and conflict resolution.
Harrison Lee, an Accounting major and Economics minor at JMU and a member of the men’s tennis team, understands this synergy firsthand. Having played tennis since he was eight, Lee has learned valuable lessons in time management, resilience, and self-belief that have translated to his academic life. He sees the importance of prioritizing what’s best for the team in any given moment, whether it’s winning a match or supporting teammates from the sidelines. This mindset extends to his studies, where he effectively manages his schedule to excel both individually and on group projects.
Lee’s experience as a student-athlete has also taught him unexpected lessons about collaboration. He has learned the importance of being surrounded by people who are going through similar experiences, bonding with his teammates over difficult practices or long trips. This shared struggle allows them to trust each other and push through challenges. His tennis team, which includes many international students, has also taught him how to work with people from different backgrounds and with different skills, a lesson that has proven invaluable in class group projects.
When asked about the similarities between coaches and professors, Lee notes their shared consistency in encouraging students to give their best effort. Both his coaches and professors provide the necessary resources to help him succeed, from practice problems and review websites for his classes to encouragement during practices and matches. Lee’s dedication has earned him numerous academic and athletic honors, including being named a JMU Athletic Director’s Scholar-Athlete twice and an Intercollegiate Tennis Association Scholar-Athlete in 2024. He continues to apply the lessons of teamwork from the court to his academic life, making an impact in both areas.
