Student-Athletes Report High Trust in Their Colleges, But Affordability Remains a Concern

Nearly two in three student-athletes say they have somewhat or very high trust in their college or university, according to the first installment of the 2025–26 Student Voice survey series. While confidence in institutions is strong, financial pressures continue to be a major challenge, even for athletes who receive scholarships or stipends.

Public trust in higher education has been slowly improving after years of decline, but student-athletes’ perspectives highlight areas where campuses can do better—especially around affordability, support services, and balancing academic and athletic commitments. For many athletes, trust is closely linked to the resources and guidance they receive both on and off the field.

Survey results suggest that while colleges are succeeding in creating environments where student-athletes feel supported and respected, gaps remain in making higher education fully accessible and sustainable. Financial constraints, including limited funding for tutoring, nutrition, mental health services, and travel, continue to affect their experience.

Administrators can use these insights to better align programs and resources with the needs of student-athletes, ensuring that trust in their institutions translates into stronger outcomes both in the classroom and in competition.
