Virginia Tech Seeks $229 Million Boost to Athletics Budget

Virginia Tech’s Board of Visitors is set to review a proposal to increase the athletics budget by an additional $229 million over the next four years. This move is aimed at helping the Hokies compete with top programs in the ACC, especially as the school searches for a new football coach.
The proposal asks for $47.1 million in the first year (2026-27), which would raise the total athletics budget to $190.1 million. By 2029-30, the budget would grow to $212.1 million.
This request comes after the firing of football coach Brent Pry, following an 0-3 start to the season. The team hasn’t been a serious contender for an ACC title since 2016, and athletic director Whit Babcock has pointed to the department’s financial struggles as a key reason for its lack of competitiveness. The current athletics budget of $122 million is ranked 14th in the ACC. Babcock has emphasized that the department “cannot keep taking pride in doing more with less” and that a budget closer to $200 million is necessary for the Hokies to succeed.
